Rath Yatra, celebrated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is one of the most significant chariot festivals in India, second only to the famous Rath Yatra in Puri. This vibrant festival honours Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Krishna, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. The festival takes place annually on the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha (June-July) and features a grand procession of elaborately decorated chariots.
During Rath Yatra, the idols of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are placed on towering chariots and pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees. The procession starts from the historic Jagannath Temple in the Jamalpur area and traverses a significant route through the old city. This tradition dates back to 1878 and has grown into a major public event, drawing crowds from across the region and beyond.
The festival is marked by various rituals, including the Pahind Vidhi, where the Chief Minister of Gujarat ceremonially sweeps the path of the chariots. The procession is accompanied by decorated elephants, trucks, and cultural performances, creating a festive atmosphere. Rath Yatra symbolises unity, devotion, and the rich cultural heritage of Gujarat.
